B-508 / PIERRE DOUX

Refrigerated cargo ship PIERRE DOUX (type B-508)

Keel laid: 12 December 1994

Launched: 23 June 1995

Delivered: 29 December 1995

These vessels were designed using the experienced gained with 67 refrigerated cargo ships and fish carriers and almost 20 container vessels built at Gdańsk Shipyard. The Gdańsk engineers designed a successful combination of a container ship and a refrigerated cargo carrier.

Technical specifications:

capacity: 9438 GT, 9357 DWT, 108 TEU;

dimensions: 138.1 x 21.5 x 8.9 m

propulsion: Cegielski-MAN-B&W 7550MC diesel engine with 10,010 kW power

speed: 20.0 knots

crew: 40

Two type B-508 vessels were built for a Greek shipowner in 1994-1996.

Classic refrigerated cargo ships, which became Gdańsk Shipyard’s speciality for a period of several years, slowly began to be replaced by container vessels that could carry refrigerated containers. The only condition was to provide electricity to the containers to power the cooling devices, which was not a technological problem. However, the increasingly common use of refrigerated containers did not completely eliminate floating cold stores from the seas.

For example, two type B-508 ships were designed in Gdańsk Shipyard and built in 1994-1996 for a Greek shipowner. They were designed to carry bananas, citrus fruit and other frozen goods in four holds with a total capacity of 400,000 cubic feet and palletised cargo handling ability. Temperatures from -25oC to +13oC can be maintained in the holds. The ship has handling equipment for self-sufficient cargo loading and unloading. There is room for 108 containers on deck, including 34 reefers.
